Make your own emergency plan:
- Review emergency risks (fire, severe weather, earthquakes) and response actions with household members
- Identify designated safe areas in the home for each type of emergency
- Discuss procedures for power outages and personal injuries
- Create a home floor plan and mark two exit routes from each room
- Demonstrate how to shut off water, gas, and electricity at main controls
- Post emergency contact numbers near all phones
- Teach children when and how to call 911, police, and fire services
- Instruct household members to monitor emergency information via radio
- Select one local and one out-of-state emergency contact
- Ensure children know the out-of-state contact’s phone number
- Establish two family meeting locations (near home and outside the neighborhood)
- Complete basic first aid and CPR training
- Store important documents in a fireproof and waterproof container
