Emergency Plan

Make your own emergency plan:

  • Review emergency risks (fire, severe weather, earthquakes) and response actions with household members
  • Identify designated safe areas in the home for each type of emergency
  • Discuss procedures for power outages and personal injuries
  • Create a home floor plan and mark two exit routes from each room
  • Demonstrate how to shut off water, gas, and electricity at main controls
  • Post emergency contact numbers near all phones
  • Teach children when and how to call 911, police, and fire services
  • Instruct household members to monitor emergency information via radio
  • Select one local and one out-of-state emergency contact
  • Ensure children know the out-of-state contact’s phone number
  • Establish two family meeting locations (near home and outside the neighborhood)
  • Complete basic first aid and CPR training
  • Store important documents in a fireproof and waterproof container
